Rules for examinations and promotion

Toddlers to Preparatory

Pre-Primary

Pre-Primary classes follow continuous evaluation on the basis of work done in school. After every term, evaluation grades and a detailed subjective report (as applicable) are shared, based on the teacher’s continuous observation of the student.

Classes I to VIII

Primary & Upper Primary

The academic year is divided into two terms, with holistic quality assessment on a regular basis.
At the end of the first term there is a comprehensive evaluation of 80 marks and an internal evaluation of 20 marks.
Continuous internal assessments combine periodical class evaluation, practicals, projects (group / sub-group / individual) and activity-based learning.
The annual comprehensive evaluation covers 60% of the second-term syllabus and 40% of the first-term syllabus.
The acceptable mark for adequate comprehension is 40% in each subject and 40% in overall aggregate.

Note: Till Class VIII, promotion or detention after failing in one or more subjects is at the discretion of the Head of the School.

A grading system is also followed for Art & Craft / SUPW, Moral Education, General Knowledge, Sanskrit and co-curricular activities:

All classes

General instructions

If a student is absent for any assessment or examination (Half Yearly / Annual), even on medical grounds, no rank is awarded and no re-test is conducted. Promotion is judged on remaining papers.
Absence on medical grounds requires an application and medical certificate within 3 days. Repeated incidents may lead to detention.
Sick-leave applications must be submitted by the parent, followed by a certificate from a widely accepted medical practitioner of not less than MBBS level when the child resumes. The child is marked “Absent” and overall marks exclude those papers.
Depending on intensity and frequency, the school may take any appropriate decision, including detention. No rank is awarded when a child is absent, even medically, in assessments and examinations.
Use or suspected use of unfair means results in zero marks in that paper and no rank. Repeated instances result in expulsion.

Classes IX & X

Secondary

Promotion from Class 9 to 10 follows CISCE rules and the student’s cumulative achievement in registered subjects. The candidate must obtain at least 33% in aggregate in five subjects including English on the cumulative average, and at least 33% in five subjects including English in the first term and annual examination, with a minimum attendance of 75% of working days.

Promotion on trial, re-examination or grace marks from Class 9 to 10 is not granted. Pass certificates are awarded to candidates who appear for and pass a minimum of six subjects and attain the pass standard in at least five subjects including English, plus a pass grade in SUPW.

The year has two terms: Half-Yearly at the end of Term I, and Annual / ICSE (Board) at the end of Term II. Internal assessment includes periodical tests, practicals, projects and activity-based learning.

Classes XI & XII

Senior Secondary

Promotion from Class XI to XII is based on cumulative achievement in registered subjects. A candidate must obtain at least 35% in a minimum of four subjects including English, on the cumulative average, with a minimum attendance of 75% of working days. No other promotion criteria apply.

Promotion on trial, re-examination or grace marks from XI to XII is not permissible and will not be accepted by the Council.

A candidate may not enter for more than six subjects including compulsory English.
Subjects cannot be changed after 31 October of the year of Class XI registration.
No Class XII subject may be offered that was not studied in Class XI.
Practical papers are incomplete unless the practical examination is also taken.
A Transfer Certificate should not state “Promoted to Class XII” unless promotion criteria are met.

CISCE

Awards and conditions for awards

Pass certificates are awarded to candidates who, at one and the same examination, attain the pass standard in four or more subjects including English and a pass grade in SUPW and Community Service (assessed internally).
Supplementary pass certificates are awarded to candidates who already hold a pass certificate and later attain the pass standard in one or more additional subjects.
A statement of marks is issued to all candidates. The pass mark for each subject is 35%.

An ICSE student must pass in English and four other subjects, one of which must be the second language. If a student fails in English, the Council will not award a pass certificate.
